Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! – Vorschau

by TMSIDR

Director: Tatsuya Ishihara (Regisseur bei Clannad, Air, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Nichijou)
Series Composition: Jukki Hanada (Steins;Gate, Nichijou, Rozen Maiden, Sola)
Chief Animation Director/Character Designs: Kazumi Ikeda (Clannad, Kanon 2006)
Background Art: Mutsuo Shinohara (K-ON!, Hyouka, Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya)

 Contract Complete
(Top Left)
Rikka Takanashi: This chuunibyou patient spends her time above Yuuta’s family. Sensing the same aura in Yuuta, the Devilish Truth Stare has bound him in a contract. Of course, that’s a delusion.

(Top Right)
Think about it. If you were once a boy who said „Disappear in my flames of darkness!“ and you met a beautiful girl who cutely said to you „Is my eye resonating with you?“ And then that same cute girl tormented you with all of her troubles, well, you can’t leave her alone. In short, that’s the relationship that Yuuta and Rikka have.
When our heroine, Rikka, mentions her „cool rascal“ phrases and begins her grand delusions, Yuuta rebukes her. Sometimes it brings that emotionless face to the point of tears. The chuunibyou portion was written by veteran scriptwriter Jukki Hanada, who combined pointless delusions and chuunibyou phrases into the story.
Hey you! Notice the out-of-this-world battle portions in the new PV on the official site! Things like that incredibly pointless, but flashy, magic circle called forth by Rikka’s Devilish Truth Stare (that snow crystal crest) are all delusions. They’re all delusional! Make sure you enjoy this (dazzling?!) romance!

(Pictures at top of page)
Thrilling Chuuni!
The new PV begins with pointless, but pretty awesome action from the Devilish Truth Stare. In between the action, you’ll see a moment where Rikka’s cowering after Yuuta’s retort. Incidentally, you’ll also see glimpses of Yuuta’s chuunibyou past. Back then he was as infected as Rikka is now!

Let’s Begin!
1. What’s above chuunibyou
Though she numbers bring her thoughts to a sudden halt, Rikka’s not that stupid. Could that problem with math be due to making up stories related to the Devilish Truth Stare? That’s the key to this tale. When Yuuta finds out what makes Rikka, Rikka, this romantic comedy should change into a full romance. Keep track of that when Yuuta first has to make rebuttals to Rikka’s delusions.

2. Explain about the Devilish Truth Stare!
The Devilish Truth Stare is an invisible dark power in Rikka’s right eye that she keeps sealed by an eyepatch. It’s almost as if it were some holy spirit. Once it begins to shine brightly, that snow crystal magic circle is invoked. It has the power to cross over time and see the past and future of her companion!….or so she made up. To make matters worse, there’s a girl one year younger than Rikka, Sanae Dekomori, who calls herself Rikka’s servant. With these two, the amount of chuunibyou has gotten worse!

Supervisor Tatsuya Ishihara interview (Please tell me!) (MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE ANIME)

Looking at the script, it seems Rikka is more clumsy and cute than she was in the novel.
Ishihara: When you think about chuunibyou, you think of something cool in your head, but as I was reading the novel, Rikka had more of a playful look to her when she was in front of Yuuta. I thought that was pretty good; I called her this „cool rascal.“ (laughs) I advised the animators and directors to ensure Rikka stayed as emotionless as a baby. „Keep that pure feeling.“

Her amount of acting has grown, hasn’t it?
Ishihara: She’s the protagonist, isn’t she? (laughs) If she doesn’t do something, then the story doesn’t move along. Unintentionally, perhaps by reflex, I put some of my own thoughts in with her. Well, I also did the same for Yuuta.

There’s a lot more rebukes by Yuuta too.
Ishihara: It’s not meant to be a two-person comedy act, but we made the idiotic rebukes between Rikka and Yuuta a little bit more powerful in the anime. Yuuta’s comments are supposed to reflect what the audience’s and I want to say in the scene as you watch it on TV. We ensured that thosee comments were added for Yuuta in the storyboards.

One of the big changes I saw to the anime is that Rikka’s apartment is above the Togashis.
Ishihara: Putting the two together in the same building is a small change to make the story more entertaining. Yuuta’s family is something to watch for in the anime. I don’t want to spoil you, but keep track of how they affect the story.

Are there any other points to look for in the anime?
Ishihara: There’s some here and there. I can safely say this is a KyoAni work; after all, we published the original novels, didn’t we? This time, however, we altered a lot from the novel. The novel fans who see the anime will think it’s something different due to how much we changed. The end of the story has been completely changed.

The action in the latest PV was amazing.
Ishihara: When we made the PV, I wanted to make it very thrilling. The whole concept was „The thrill of chuunibyou.“ (laughs) But to make sure the audience didn’t get confused that it’s a type of alternate world battle show, we made sure to show the characters over-acting and included a lot of gag scenes too. The anime itself is an entertaining and enjoyable romantic comedy. I think after seeing the first episode, people will say „What the?! This is just an ordinary romantic comedy!“ (laughs)

Those delusional battle scenes left a big impression
Ishihara: The amount is increased from the original novel. They’re a part of the fun of this story. We made sure that the magic circles were specialized for each character. For example, „Rikka“ means crystallized snow. That’s a bit of trivia for the readers. (laughs) So, thus the magic circle for the Devilish Truth Stare has snow crystals in it.

Oh! I see now!
Ishihara: This story is definitely a romantic comedy though. When you see things like the idiotic conversations/meetings between Rikka and Yuuta, I think you’ll enjoy it. When you finish the entire show, you’ll understand that it’s meant to be a real romantic story. Please watch it through the very end.

Translation (character descriptions are 90% similar to before, thus no translation):
Chuunibyou was „cute“?!
Unleash the sealed Devilish Truth Stare!

(Images at top)
Rikka’s a bit shy when meeting strangers, but for some reason she’s become attached to Yuuta. Hope her head’s all right from that tapping.

What kind of power is that „Devilish Truth Stare“ sealed underneath her eyepatch?! That’s definitely not your ordinary right eye!

(Text box at top)
Frankly, Rikka is amazing!
Uchida-san claims „I want to be pulled around the world by Rikka!“ Just what is Rikka’s appeal?
„Let’s see. First, it’s alright that she’s a bit clumsy! It was so cute when Yuuta was tapping her on the head with that scale! Oh! I think her „chuunibyou poses“ are so cool! I want to seal my arm too~“

Has this sweet girl….been brainwashed by this dark atmosphere?! Let’s hunt for the voice of Rikka Takanashi, Maaya Uchida! It would be a disaster if playing the „chuunibyou high schooler“ role has influenced her to hide secret powers behind eyepatches/bandages and uttering ridiculous phrases!
„Rikka’s awfully cute. I’m not the chuunibyou type, but I have a lot of fun voicing her. It’s a difficult role; I have to voice katakana phrases and kanji I’ve never heard of before….“
Certainly that goes for Rikka’s trademark „Devilish Truth Stare“ too. Well, maybe everyone’s spoken like one of those patients before.
„Thinking back when I was a middle schooler… I remember chasing after an evil organization that I had made up all-throughout the town. I even had the theme song in my head, but then it suddenly rained….“
Is Uchida-san perfect for the chuunibyou role?! Could we see an actual Devilish Truth Stare unleashed as she plays Rikka?!

Translation! (Minor spoiler at the end)
Newtype 2012/10!
„A chuunibyou style story that’s a romantic comedy at heart.“ -Supervisor Tatsuya Ishihara

Yuuta Togashi: This former chuunibyou patent used to call himself the „Dark Flame Master“ when he was in middle school. Once he entered high school, he sealed away his embarrassing past….

Rikka Takanashi: Underneath her eyepatch is a hidden power called the „Devilish Truth Stare“….or so this chuunibyou patient made up. Aparently she’s waited eons to reunite with the Dark Flame Master.

(underneath images on left)
Once the Devilish Truth Stare is activated, reality drastically changes. We tried to portray that in the PV, with the cool imagery and music, and in this newly drawn illustration by showing everyone’s comedic movements and facial expressions. „It’s really changed!“ But which form is real?! You might want to pay attention to the balance between reality and delusion in the show.

Arranging the original story in pursuit of something entertaining
This fall, Kyoto Animation’s newest work, Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! has high expectations. The series desires to decisively portray „chuunibyou.“

Supervisor Tatsuya Ishihara confesses „To be honest, I also suffered from the disease.“ How will he put that enthusiasm into this show?

„This story is targeting people who have been cured from chuunibyou. People who are infected now might prefer a cooler anime. (laughs) If someone mentions chuunibyou, it’s typically seen in a negative light, but this story portrays it more entertainingly. With the battle elements in the PV we showed at Comiket, we tried to disguise it as an ordinary chuunibyou type show, but it’s an enjoyable romantic comedy once you pull that layer away. We’d like everyone to see it, even people who’d reject it once they heard the word ‚chuunibyou.'“

The heroine, Rikka Takanashi, is an infected chuunibyou patient. Strangely, her phrases and actions aren’t painful to watch. They’re more cute than anything.

„It may annoy people, but Rikka will act that way. Including Rikka, we have quite a cast of female characters: the dependable class rep Shinka Nibutani, the amazingly idiotic underclassman Dekomori, and the gentle Kumin-senpai. I think we also have quite an amazing cast assembled as well. Surely seiyuu fans would go „I know what you mean!“ won’t they? (laughs)“

Shinka Nibutani appeared in the novel, but Kumin Tsuyuri and Sanae Dekomori are anime original characters. The reason they were created was that there wouldn’t be enough characters for a TV series. Similarly, the story has been arranged to have many new elements added.

„The amount of novel material we had was insufficient even though it was published via Kyoto Animation’s KA Esuma label. In short, it feels more like an original series from our company. Because of that, we put so much effort into this series. ‚Make it entertaining until the very last scene!‘ We put in every entertaining moment we could think of and arranged them together. The end is also different from the novels. We hope you enjoy watching it until the very end.“

Bericht vom Tokyo-Screening der ersten beiden Folgen aus 2ch:

Initial Greeting:
Suddenly Uchida-san’s voice came through the speakers to spout a chuunibyou phrase and the main cast (minus Fukuyama) came on stage. Each of them gave an introduction. Following that, Fukuyama’s voice came through the speakers and spouted another chuunibyou line prior to his arrival. He was dressed in a chuunibyou outfit like he had worn to Kyoto, but this time his shirt was sleeveless.
„I know what you want to say. You don’t have to say it.“ – Fukuyama
„Whoa, it’s like Pikmin!“ – Uchida as she waved to the crowd.
„Stop teasing everyone!“ – Fukuyama
After that, Akasaki continued on.

-Did they mention anything about the showing last week?
(in reference to the Chuunibyou phrase contest)
„You’ll never be able to feel clean after the previous showing.“ – Fukuyama
„From here on, I’ll think about how dangerous winning may be.“ – Uchida while smiling

They continued by announcing that a magazine would be covering it and talked about chuunibyou poses. Then the four girls suddenly went into poses on stage. Uchida went into a Jesus pose and Fukuyama went into a „Thinker“ pose.

The conversation moved to the trip the female seiyuu took to KyoAni last week.
„What? You guys got to go before I could and have fun…“ Fukuyama pouted.
Uchida-san replied „We went to the rooftop!“
According to Asakura-san, it was like a nursery school. The interior and exterior looked cute.
„Ah! Is that so? It’s probably to make the staff think ‚Is everyone ready to draw?'“ – Fukuyama replied and the audience laughed.

From here episode 1 aired. After a short talk break, episode 2 followed.

Author’s spoiler-free impessions: The characters are really cute and the way Yuuta treats Rikka is charming. During the delusional battles, I felt fired up, but I was grinning during the comedic portions. Though I felt uneasy remembering my own chuuni moments, it was an entertaining show. the OP focused only on Rikka while the ED was a „Evil Eye Bon Dance.“ I thought Rikka’s SD ED was really really good. Why couldn’t they use that in the actual show. For the real ED, the four girls will sing as a unit.

After the airings, the cast came back on stage. (umx note: I’m omitting their thoughts on the show until after episode 2 airs).

-Class 3-B, Mr. Evil Eye has arrived!
This was the same small skit as was performed in Kyoto. „Everyone act in their role and say some chuunibyou lines. If there’s no objections, then we’ll crown Evil Eye-sensei.“ The audience would serve as the judge based on their clapping. The top two would go to a face-off. Incidentally, they were advised to use the coolest kanji characters and respective katakana to pronounce them.

Asakura-san: „You and I are soulmates!“ (When she was a student there was someone who ate alone. One time in the classroom someone said that phrase.)
Akasaki-san: „Once again, white is corroding the black…“ (On stage, she was standing beside Uchida-san, who was wearing white while Akasaki was wearing a black jacket. In response, Fukuyama replied „Hey, if you sit on an Akibahara rail while wearing black jeans, you’ll get stripes. You could try that tomorrow.“
Uesaki-san: „Arise Dark Berbers!“ (Somehow it was related to using sauce on fried foods like croquettes. Incidentally, the author voted for her.
Uchida-san: „This Oriental mystery seduces me….“ (The audience was befuddled. Apparently she was referring to curry. Fukuyama replied „Indian food is not Oritental. They’re by the Indian Ocean!“ Uchida-san had written this on the palm of her hands)

Asakura-san and Uesaki-san had moved on to the face-off. The author did not have a clear memory of this portion, so some things may differ from other accounts.
Asakura-san: „Can we escape our past lives….“ (She used it to betray someone to make them be by themselves.)
Uesaki-san: „The ignorant cannot chirp….“ (Uesaki had some difficulties and stumbled while saying her lines. It was cute. She had shut out her surroundings with headphones.

And with past stories, Asakura-san won the event. The crowd started calling her Evil Eye-sensei and she said „I won’t forget any of your faces!!“

After that, they gave away a signed poster to a lucky fan by lottery.

From then onwards, Supervisor Ishihara came on stage.
Uchida-san asked him what to look forward to in the anime. He replied „You can’t say just one thing about this show, but because it’s using a chuunibyou theme, it’s a 21st century show.“
Uesaki asked if he had suffered chuunibyou. His reply: „I’ve also said to my friends ‚The wind is strong today….‘ and was turned down. Looking back, it was painful. But recently I’ve been using German names for lenses due to my camera hobby.“ He’s still infected.
Finally, he was asked „Are our voices alright?“ Ishihara replied „I have no issues with them. I think you bring life into the characters. You bring life into the anime itself.“ When he first saw it, he really loved the show.

After this everyone said some parting thoughts and the event ended. During the screening the author laughed and clapped. They said it was a really good event. They look forward to October.

A gathering in reality as well as delusion.

As he entered high school, Yuuta Togashi had sealed away his deluded flames of darkness and the Black Flame Dragon he had stored in his right arm. But is he at the end of his rope upon meeting the infected chuunibyou patient Rikka Takanashi, the self-created user of the “Devilish Truth Stare”, and becoming enchanted by her?! She’s guided him back to that world of adventure he created in his head! Feeling lost between the delusional chuunibyou soul he left behind and the reality of high school life, his story of anguish begins…

At the core of this work is Rikka, a clumsy girl whose actions and speech are so cute it hurts! Not only that, in the anime there’s a middle school follower of Rikka’s chuunibyou: Sanae Dekomori. When she’s added, the cuteness hurts 3 times worse! Supervisor Tatsuya Ishihara has been able to portray Rikka’s failed creations, useless but cool-looking poses, and clumsiness in such a cute manner. In the past, he has been able to portray the troublesome, but cute Fuko Ibuki and separated from this world’s manners Kotomi Ichinose from Clannad, so we expect he’ll be able to portray Rikka’s charm perfectly this time as well. No doubt he’s up to the job!

Supporter’s voice:
1. Characters:I’m sure everyone can picture Yuuta crushing his old “stronger self” that he designed as he grew up. But what if he shared that delusion with Rikka? That would certainly be the ideal student life Rikka has in mind for Yuuta. By all means, this would be the first topic to discuss!
2. Worldview: (spoilers, not translating) From the bloodthirsty reality into the utopia they create in this world. Of course they’ll pick that world!

Characters (Right->Left)
Kumin Tsuyuri (五月七日くみん)
This second year high schooler always has a pillow prepared in her bag. An easy going person with a calming personality; she’s able to sleep anywhere. Her special talent is “Cell Phone no Cell Phone.”

Sanae Dekomori (凸守早苗)
Attracted by Rikka’s Devilish Truth Stare, this middle schooler became her servant. With her reckless personality, she and Rikka are sure to bother everyone with their chuunibyou world.

Rikka Takanashi (小鳥遊六花)
Speechless and emotionless, this first year high schooler is the self-created user of the Devilish Truth Stare. After forming something called a contract with Yuuta, she’s become emotionally attached to him. It’s strange since this clumsy girl is afraid of strangers.

Shinka Nibutani (丹生谷森夏)
Yuuta and Rikka’s classmate. This popular girl works together with Yuuta as class reps. Brightful, helpful, and beautiful, but she’s prejudiced against chuunibyou.

Interview: Maaya Uchida (Rikka Takanashi role)
– First, will you tell us a bit about this series’s charm and/or interesting points?
Uchida: I think its charm is portraying the nostalgic times when Yuuta was infected with chuunibyou in addition to the difference between delusion and reality. That’s probably it!

-Uchida-san, what do you think about when you hear the term chuunibyou?
Uchida: An older European castle. Dark. Hands over your face. Painful.

-Rikka’s chuunibyou appears to have been worsened. From that, what do you think her cute points are?
Uchida: Her revolving facial expressions! Occasionally you’ll see Rikka and go “CUTE!”

-In this work, there are other characters like Shinka, Kumin, and Sanae that appear. Which character is your favorite and which character would you become friends with?
Uchida: I absolutely love Rikka. I’d like to go to Harajuku with her as friends.

-Uchida-san, from around your middle school days to your high school days, did you ever contract the chuunibyou disease?!
Uchida: Umm…. Perhaps now too….

-What? Seriously? (sweats) Then if you were to obtain a chuunibyou style power, what would you create and what would you name it?!
Uchida: After meeting a sea nymph, I received the Dolphin Break power (of swimming). To swim… or not to swim… (sweats)

-After reading the novels, what image did you have in mind for your Rikka voice. How do you think you’ll perform as her during recording?
Uchida: I think Rikka has a voice that’s experienced pain before, so I wanted to play it straight with her pain. She still may put up a facade though. By the way… what kind of pained voice should I use….?

-Finally, please give a message to the fans!
Uchida: Everyone, I hope you enjoy the show and I hope you love the Rikka I perform as! Full Throttle Chuunibyou! VIVA Chuunibyou! I look forward to performing for everyone!
