Trivia zu Folge 3 (chronologisch)
Achtung Spoiler!!!
(Scroll down in the article for an English translation)

Trivia of Episode 3 (
chronological)
Beware of Spoilers!!!

  • The scenes at the beginning might remind the viewer a little bit of the stranger scenes of Neon Genesis Evangelion and because of Yuki’s Rei-like character and appearance this might be a reference.

  • Yuki’s explanation also includes a part about others of her kind who might be more active than her and gives Kyon an indirect warning, that he might be in danger. Perhaps she references to the future actions of Ryoko.

  • After the conversation with Yuki a small scene (about 27 sec.) was inserted. He thinks there about her state mind and holds the book she lent him in his hands.Haruhi-03-kyon_thinking
  • Furthermore, the Othello scence was extended by 6 seconds. The viewer now finds out that Yuki never played Othello before….
    Haruhi-03-othello
  • …but nevertheless seems to win against Mikuru before the game is interrupted by Haruhi (this was also in the TV broadcast).
  • For the DVD also the introduction of Itsuki was extended by about 45 seconds.
Itsuki introduces himself to Kyon and both shake hands:

Haruhi now also mentions the names of the members (before she just used numbers):

Mikurus trips and falls on the desk with the Othello game:

    Itsuki helps her:

    Kyon gets jealous:

    Haruhi delivers another quick speach:

  • For the photos of Mikuru in her maid outfit Haruhi uses a Casio Exilim EX-Z57 (oder EX-Z55).

  • Mikuru uses the same camera in „Remote Island Syndrome (Part 1) / kotou shoukougun (zenpen)“
  • The rule that the last one at the meeting point has to pay is introduced in this episode.
  • The SOS-Brigade eats in a fast food restaurant that reminds of McDonalds
  • Kyon reads in the library the second volume of „I‐My‐Me“ der Light Novel „Gakkō wo Deyō“ (Let’s leave School), another book by Nagaru Tanigawa, author of the Haruhi light novels
  • Kyon’s cell phone is a Panasonic FOMA 902i

  • The book of the week for Yuki is this time „The Phenomenology of Spirit“ by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel in the Japanese translation

  • In the morning Kyon placed his bike in an area, in which bikes aren’t allowed to be parked.

At the end of the day it got removed. This might the punishment oh Haruhi because Yuki and he returned late.
  • The next day at school Haruhi shows her bad mood very openly and Kyon asks her if she knows the story of „The Bluebird of Happiness“. He probably meant the fantastic play L’Oiseau bleu (The Blue Bird) by Maurice Maeterlinck, that is about 2 children that start a journey to find a blue bird and finally discover it in their home. Wikipedia writes that the locations and characters the children visit are similar to espers, aliens and time travellers that Haruhi is searching for.  The story also includes a shared dream, but it would be strange if Kyon already references to events that will happen later in „The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya VI“. Perhaps Kyon just want to give Haruhi a hint that the groups she is searching for are already in her environment. He seems to change to his mind about this idea a few seconds later. This story also exists as an anime and multiple movies.

  • In the ending Kyon’s an Haruhi’s names are showed on the same shot without the other characters. Perhaps this is a reference to lots drawing  in the episodes where Kyon an Haruhi were never in the same group. Perhaps this is just a coincidence because the episode includes less voice actors…
  • The preview of the next episode „Remote Island Syndrome (Part 1) / kotou shoukougun (zenpen)“ of the TV broadcast Kyon shouts „Na, Nandattee?“ („W-What was that?“). Thism ight be a reference to the manga „MMR Magazine Mystery Reportage„.
